What's Eating Gilbert Grape, directed by Lasse Hallström, is a drama set in a small, stagnant Midwestern town. Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) shoulders the responsibility of caring for his morbidly obese mother and his intellectually disabled younger brother, Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Gilbert feels trapped by his circumstances until Becky (Juliette Lewis), a free-spirited young woman, arrives in town and offers him a glimpse of a different life.

Did You Know?

Leonardo DiCaprio received his first Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal of Arnie Grape. To prepare for the role, DiCaprio spent time at a home for mentally challenged teens. Darlene Cates, who played the housebound mother, Bonnie Grape, was discovered after appearing on a talk show discussing her struggles with obesity. The film is based on the 1991 novel of the same name by Peter Hedges, who also wrote the screenplay.
