Directed by Oliver Stone, this 1987 drama is a quintessential film of the "Greed is Good" decade. The story follows Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), a young and ambitious stockbroker who is desperate to make it to the big leagues. He manages to get the attention of the legendary and ruthless corporate raider, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), and is soon drawn into a world of insider trading, immense wealth, and moral decay. The film serves as a cautionary tale about the excesses and corruption of 1980s finance. Michael Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his iconic portrayal of Gekko.
Interesting Tidbit: The character of Gordon Gekko was not based on a single person but was a composite of several real-life Wall Street figures from the era, most notably corporate raider Carl Icahn and arbitrageur Ivan Boesky. In fact, Boesky, who was convicted of insider trading, gave a famous commencement speech in 1986 where he said, "Greed is all right, by the way... I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself." This speech was a direct inspiration for Gekko's famous "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good" monologue.
