Total Recall, directed by Paul Verhoeven, is a science fiction action film set in 2084, based on Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a construction worker haunted by dreams of Mars. He visits Rekall, a company that implants false memories of vacations, and chooses a trip to Mars as a secret agent. However, the procedure goes wrong, seemingly unlocking repressed memories of his true identity as a secret agent whose life is in danger.
Did You Know?
The film was in development for over a decade with numerous directors and actors attached before Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger came on board. It was one of the most expensive films made at the time of its release, known for its groundbreaking special effects and graphic violence, which won a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects. Sharon Stone's role as Lori, Quaid's wife, was a breakout performance for her. The film's complex narrative deliberately blurs the line between reality and implanted memory, leaving audiences to debate Quaid's true experiences.
