The Woman King is a 2022 historical action-drama directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Set in the 1820s, the film follows General Nanisca (Viola Davis), leader of the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit protecting the West African kingdom of Dahomey. As external threats loom and internal conflicts arise, Nanisca trains a new generation of warriors, including the spirited Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), to defend their homeland and challenge societal norms. The film delves into themes of sisterhood, resilience, and the fight against oppression, offering a compelling narrative inspired by true events.

To authentically portray the Agojie warriors, the cast underwent intense physical training, including martial arts, weightlifting, and endurance exercises. Fight coordinator Danny Hernandez noted that their dedication surpassed that of some male action stars.
The film is inspired by the real-life Agojie, also known as the Dahomey Amazons, who were an all-female military regiment in the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin).
Filming took place in South Africa and faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Despite these challenges, the production team successfully completed the film, capturing the rich landscapes and cultural settings integral to the story.
The Woman King premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread praise for its storytelling, performances, and action sequences. Viola Davis's portrayal of General Nanisca was particularly lauded.
