Directed by Brian De Palma with a screenplay by David Mamet, this 1987 crime film is a stylish and fictionalized account of the effort to bring down gangster Al Capone in Prohibition-era Chicago. The story follows Federal Treasury agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) as he assembles a small, hand-picked team of incorruptible lawmen—"The Untouchables"—to wage war on Capone's (Robert De Niro) criminal empire. The film is celebrated for its thrilling action sequences, Ennio Morricone's powerful score, and an Oscar-winning performance by Sean Connery as the veteran Irish-American cop, Jimmy Malone.
Interesting Tidbit: The film's famous Union Station shootout on the grand staircase is a direct homage to the "Odessa Steps" sequence from Sergei Eisenstein's classic 1925 silent film, Battleship Potemkin. Director Brian De Palma masterfully recreated the tension of the original scene, complete with a slow-motion baby carriage rolling precariously down the steps amidst the gunfire, creating one of the most memorable and technically brilliant action set-pieces of the 1980s.
