The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, is a satirical science fiction film about Truman Burbank, a man who unknowingly lives his entire life as the star of a 24/7 reality television show. Everyone he knows, including his wife and best friend, are actors, and his idyllic hometown of Seahaven is actually a massive, meticulously controlled television set. As Truman begins to suspect the truth, he attempts to escape his artificial world.

Did You Know?

The film was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Best Original Screenplay. Andrew Niccol's original script was much darker in tone, more like a science-fiction thriller, before Peter Weir came on board as director and infused it with a lighter, more comedic feel. Several visual effects were used subtly to enhance the artificiality of Seahaven, such as the way distant objects sometimes appeared slightly out of focus or two-dimensional. The concept for the film predated the boom of reality television shows that would become prevalent in the following years.
