The Silence of the Lambs, directed by Jonathan Demme, is a psychological horror-thriller that follows Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a top FBI trainee who is tasked with interviewing Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist and incarcerated, manipulative cannibalistic serial killer. The FBI hopes Lecter's insight can help them capture another serial killer, known as "Buffalo Bill," who skins his female victims. A twisted psychological battle of wits ensues between Starling and Lecter as she gets closer to the truth.
Did You Know?
The film is based on the 1988 novel of the same name by Thomas Harris. The Silence of the Lambs is one of only three films in history to win Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Anthony Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lecter is one of the most iconic in film history, yet he is on screen for only about 16 minutes of the film's entire runtime. The FBI was initially hesitant to be involved with the film but later cooperated, hoping it would help recruit more female agents. The moth featured on the film's famous poster is a Death's-head Hawkmoth.
