This 1981 French action thriller, directed by Georges Lautner, stars French cinema icon Jean-Paul Belmondo. The film follows Josselin "Joss" Beaumont (Belmondo), a French secret agent who is sent to an African country to assassinate its dictator. However, before he can complete his mission, the political situation changes, and he is betrayed by his own government, leading to his capture and imprisonment. After a daring escape two years later, he returns to Paris to seek revenge on those who wronged him, all while being hunted by his former colleagues. The film is famous for its thrilling action and its iconic, melancholic score by Ennio Morricone.
Interesting Tidbit: The film's haunting main theme, "Chi Mai," composed by Ennio Morricone, became a massive international hit. However, the music was not originally written for The Professional. Morricone had composed it over a decade earlier for the 1971 film Maddalena and it was also used in the 1978 BBC series The Life and Times of David Lloyd George. Its inclusion in The Professional, particularly in the film's unforgettable final scene, propelled the piece to worldwide fame, and it is now almost exclusively associated with this movie.
