This is the celebrated woodblock print, Maple Trees at Mama, Tekona Shrine and Linked Bridge, by the legendary Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858). It is one of the most beloved designs from his final masterpiece series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The print is renowned for its innovative and dramatic composition, where the viewer's gaze is directed through the large, dark trunks and vibrant orange leaves of a maple tree in the foreground. This natural frame opens onto a distant, tranquil view of a village landscape rendered in Hiroshige's signature rich blues, creating a profound sense of depth and atmosphere.

Historical Tidbit

Utagawa Hiroshige's work had a seismic impact on Western art, and this print is a key part of that story. The Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was an avid collector of Japanese prints and was deeply influenced by Hiroshige's radical compositions. Van Gogh owned a copy of this very print and directly copied others from the same series (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo) in oil paint to unlock their secrets of color and perspective. The technique seen here—using a large foreground element to frame a distant scene—was revolutionary to European artists and was eagerly adopted by Van Gogh and others. In this way, this quintessentially Japanese view of Edo played a direct role in the birth of Western modern art.
