Utagawa Hiroshige's work had a seismic impact on Western art, and this print is a key part of that story. Van Gogh owned a copy of this very print and directly copied others from the same series (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo) in oil paint to unlock their secrets of color and perspective. The technique seen here—using a large foreground element to frame a distant scene—was revolutionary to European artists and was eagerly adopted by Van Gogh and others. In this way, this quintessentially Japanese view of Edo played a direct role in the birth of Western modern art.
