This particular version was a television miniseries/film starring Anthony Quinn, who had long wanted to play the role of Santiago. Ernest Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1952 novella has been adapted for film and television several times; another notable version is the 1958 film starring Spencer Tracy. Anthony Quinn was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as Santiago in this 1990 adaptation. The filming took place in various Caribbean locations to capture the authentic atmosphere of the story.
