This is the celebrated and magnificent print of the American Flamingo by the legendary naturalist and artist John James Audubon. It is one of the most famous plates from his monumental work, The Birds of America (1827–1838). The hand-colored aquatint engraving depicts the large, vibrant pink bird in a dynamic, life-like pose as it bends to the water. In his signature style, Audubon places the flamingo within its natural habitat, complete with a flock in the background, seeking to capture the spirit of the living bird rather than just creating a static specimen.
Historical Tidbit
John James Audubon was obsessed with portraying every bird in The Birds of America at its true life size. To accommodate large birds like this flamingo, the book had to be printed on the largest paper sheets available at the time, a size known as the "double elephant folio," making each page about a meter (3.3 feet) tall. The project was so ambitious and expensive that no American publisher would take it on. Undeterred, Audubon sailed to Britain, where he promoted himself as a rugged "American woodsman" and funded the entire decade-long project by selling subscriptions to wealthy patrons. Today, a complete original set of The Birds of America is one of the most valuable rare books in the world, with copies selling for over $10 million.
