This 1989 animated musical fantasy from Walt Disney Animation Studios is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The film tells the story of Ariel, a spirited young mermaid princess who is fascinated with the human world. After falling in love with a human prince, she makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to temporarily become human in exchange for her voice. The film was a massive critical and commercial success, praised for its beautiful animation and its Oscar-winning score and songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
Interesting Tidbit: The Little Mermaid is widely credited with beginning the era known as the "Disney Renaissance." After a period of creative and commercial struggles from the late 1960s through the 1980s, the tremendous success of this film revitalized Disney's animation department, leading to a string of blockbuster hits throughout the 1990s, including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
