The Lighthouse is a psychological horror film directed by Robert Eggers, starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Set in the 1890s, the story follows two lighthouse keepers isolated on a remote New England island, as their sanity unravels under the pressure of solitude, harsh conditions, and mysterious happenings. Shot in stark black and white and framed in a tight, old-fashioned aspect ratio, the film creates a claustrophobic, hypnotic atmosphere that blurs the line between reality and delusion.

Did You Know?

The film was shot on 35mm black-and-white film stock using vintage lenses to authentically capture the look and feel of 19th-century photography.

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson performed many of their own physically demanding stunts, enduring brutal weather conditions during filming in Nova Scotia.

The script’s dialogue was based heavily on maritime slang and period-accurate dialects, researched from journals and literature of the time.

The unique square framing (1.19:1 aspect ratio) was chosen to make the environment feel even more oppressive and confining.

The Lighthouse received critical acclaim, particularly for its cinematography, sound design, and the intense performances by its two lead actors.
