Much of the film was shot in China, near the Afghan border, due to security concerns in Afghanistan at the time. The filmmakers worked closely with Khaled Hosseini to preserve the emotional honesty of the novel while adapting it to the screen. The two young actors who played Amir and Hassan had no previous acting experience and were chosen after an extensive casting search across Central Asia. The kite-flying scenes were particularly challenging and required real kite experts to choreograph the battles in the sky.
