The Iron Giant, directed by Brad Bird, is an animated science fiction film set in 1957 during the Cold War. It tells the story of a young boy named Hogarth Hughes who discovers and befriends a giant, metal-eating robot from outer space. As Hogarth tries to keep the giant hidden from a paranoid U.S. government agent, he teaches the powerful machine about humanity and the value of life.

Did You Know?

Despite critical acclaim, The Iron Giant was initially a box office disappointment but has since gained a significant cult following and is now widely regarded as an animation classic. The film is based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by British poet Ted Hughes, written after the death of his wife, Sylvia Plath, to comfort their children. Director Brad Bird (who would later direct The Incredibles and Ratatouille) fought to have his creative vision for the film realized, including its anti-gun message. Vin Diesel provided the voice for the Iron Giant, using only a limited vocabulary for the character.
