The Filth and the Fury is a raw documentary directed by Julien Temple, chronicling the chaotic rise and fall of the Sex Pistols, one of the most influential punk bands in history. Told largely through archival footage and candid interviews with surviving band members, the film offers an inside look at the band’s brief, explosive career and the cultural upheaval they helped ignite. Honest, gritty, and deeply human, it captures the energy and disillusionment of a generation.

Director Julien Temple also made The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, but The Filth and the Fury gave the band members a platform to tell their story their own way.
The title comes from a 1976 British newspaper headline that reacted to the Sex Pistols’ infamous television appearance filled with profanity.
The documentary uses interviews where the band members are filmed in silhouette, emphasizing their reflections rather than their celebrity.
Much of the film is set against the backdrop of economic hardship in 1970s Britain, showing how the environment fueled punk’s rebellion.
John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) insisted on presenting a more emotional, personal side of the band, especially regarding the fate of bassist Sid Vicious.
