The Ear (Ucho), directed by Karel Kachyňa, is a Czechoslovak political thriller that offers a chilling look at the paranoia and surveillance prevalent in communist Czechoslovakia. An increasingly anxious government official and his wife return home from a party to find their house has been bugged. As they search for hidden microphones ("ears"), their fear and suspicion escalate, revealing the cracks in their marriage and the oppressive nature of the regime.
Did You Know?
Filmed in 1970 during a period of political thaw, The Ear was deemed too critical of the communist regime and was immediately banned by Czechoslovak authorities before its official release. It remained unseen by the public for two decades until it was finally released after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and then screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990, where it gained international recognition. The film's stark black-and-white cinematography and claustrophobic atmosphere effectively convey the psychological tension and fear of living under constant surveillance. It is considered a masterpiece of the Czechoslovak New Wave. (While filmed in 1970, its broader international impact and availability, especially in the West, happened largely in the 1990s after its ban was lifted, making it relevant to discussions of films discovered or impactful during that decade).
