The Doors, directed by Oliver Stone, is a biographical film that chronicles the turbulent life of Jim Morrison (Val Kilmer), the iconic and enigmatic lead singer of the legendary 1960s rock band. The film follows Morrison's journey from his film school days in Los Angeles and the band's formation, through their meteoric rise to fame, his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction, his controversial on-stage persona, and his complex relationship with his girlfriend Pamela Courson (Meg Ryan), all culminating in his mysterious death in Paris at the age of 27.
Did You Know?
Val Kilmer did all of his own singing in the film, and his vocal performance was so convincing that the real members of The Doors reportedly had difficulty distinguishing his voice from Jim Morrison's. To prepare for the role, Kilmer spent a year dressing in Morrison-like clothes and memorized 50 of the band's songs. The surviving members of The Doors had mixed reactions to the film; while keyboardist Ray Manzarek praised Kilmer's performance, he was critical of the film's portrayal of Morrison, feeling it focused too heavily on his self-destructive side. Over 60 actors were reportedly considered for the role of Jim Morrison, including Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, and John Travolta, before Val Kilmer was cast.
