The Boondock Saints, written and directed by Troy Duffy, is a vigilante action thriller about two Irish Catholic fraternal twins, Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), who become convinced they are on a mission from God to rid their Boston neighborhood of criminals and evil. As they embark on their violent crusade, they are pursued by eccentric FBI agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe).
Did You Know?
The film had a very limited theatrical release and gained a significant cult following primarily through word-of-mouth and DVD sales. Writer-director Troy Duffy was the subject of the 2003 documentary Overnight, which chronicled his difficult and controversial experiences making the film and his subsequent fall from grace in Hollywood. The film's script was famously discovered when Duffy, then a bartender, passed it to an agent from Miramax. Despite its initial commercial failure, its popularity led to a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, released in 2009.
