This 1980 musical action-comedy, directed by John Landis, is based on the popular recurring musical sketch from Saturday Night Live. The film follows paroled convict "Joliet" Jake Blues (John Belushi) and his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) who, after learning the orphanage where they were raised is about to be shut down, embark on a "mission from God" to reunite their old R&B band and raise money to save it. Their quest leads them on a chaotic journey across Illinois, making enemies of the police, neo-Nazis, and a vengeful country band, all culminating in epic car chases and legendary musical performances.
Interesting Tidbit: The film was notorious for its massive and destructive car chase scenes. For the final chase through downtown Chicago, the production purchased 60 police cars at $400 each and wrecked most of them. In total, 103 cars were destroyed during filming, which was a world record at the time. The scene inside the shopping mall was also filmed in a real, abandoned mall (the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois), which the production completely revitalized with storefronts and products just to destroy it all.
