The Blade (刀), directed by Tsui Hark, is a dark and frantic revisionist martial arts film. It follows the story of Ding On, a young blacksmith at a sword-making factory who discovers that his deceased father was a legendary swordsman killed by a notorious bandit. After losing an arm in a brutal attack, he stumbles upon a broken sword and a martial arts manual, developing a ferocious and unorthodox fighting style to enact his revenge in a bleak and violent world.
Did You Know?
The film is a gritty remake of the iconic 1967 Shaw Brothers classic, The One-Armed Swordsman. Despite being a commercial failure upon its initial release, it has since been reassessed by critics and audiences, earning a massive cult following and is now considered a masterpiece of the wuxia genre. Director Tsui Hark employed chaotic, fast-paced editing and handheld camerawork to create a uniquely visceral and brutal atmosphere, setting it apart from more traditional, gracefully choreographed martial arts films. The fight choreography is intentionally raw and less polished to reflect the desperate, self-taught style of the protagonist.
