This is the world-famous 1896 poster Tournée du Chat Noir, created by the Swiss-born French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen. As one of the most recognizable artworks of the Art Nouveau movement, it features a stylized and enigmatic black cat perched against a warm background, its head framed by a decorative halo. The hand-drawn typography is masterfully woven into the composition, creating a seamless and powerful design. The poster was created to advertise the tour of Le Chat Noir, a legendary Parisian cabaret, and has since become a timeless symbol of the bohemian spirit of Belle Époque Montmartre.

Historical Tidbit

This poster advertises what is widely considered to have been the first modern cabaret. Le Chat Noir ("The Black Cat"), founded in Paris in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis, was the legendary epicenter of the city's avant-garde culture. It was a raucous, freewheeling club frequented by the likes of painters, writers, and musicians such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. More than just a drinking spot, it was a creative laboratory famous for its own satirical journal and for pioneering an innovative shadow puppet theater (Théâtre d'Ombres). The artist, Steinlen, was a regular, and his charismatic black cat became the enduring international symbol for this revolutionary hub of modernist creativity.
