Directed by Leonard Nimoy, this 1986 science-fiction adventure is the fourth film in the Star Trek series and is often fondly referred to as "the one with the whales." The story begins in the 23rd century, where a mysterious alien probe is wreaking havoc on Earth as it attempts to communicate with the now-extinct humpback whales. To save the planet, Admiral Kirk and his crew must travel back in time to 1986 San Francisco to find a pair of whales and bring them to the future. The film is celebrated for its lighthearted, comedic tone, its environmental message, and its "fish out of water" humor as the crew navigates the strange world of the 1980s.
Interesting Tidbit: The memorable "punk on the bus" scene, where Kirk and Spock are annoyed by a punk rocker blasting loud music, features a fun cameo. The punk rocker is played by Kirk Thatcher, an associate producer on the film. Thatcher not only played the part but also wrote and performed the song his character is listening to, titled "I Hate You."
