Speed, directed by Jan de Bont, is a high-octane action thriller that follows LAPD SWAT bomb disposal expert Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves). After thwarting a bomber's initial attack, Jack finds himself in a deadly cat-and-mouse game when the same vengeful terrorist arms a city bus with a bomb that will detonate if its speed drops below 50 miles per hour. With the help of a passenger, Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock), who is forced to take the wheel, Jack must find a way to keep the bus moving and save everyone on board.

The film's screenplay was written by Graham Yost, who was inspired by the 1985 film Runaway Train. Director Jan de Bont was the cinematographer on Die Hard, and his experience with action sequences heavily influenced the film's style. Keanu Reeves performed many of his own stunts, including the famous scene where he jumps from a car onto the bus. The bus jump over the gap in the unfinished freeway was a real stunt performed with a real bus, not a miniature model, achieving a height of 20 feet and traveling 109 feet. The film was a massive critical and commercial success and turned Sandra Bullock into a major star.
