Seven (often stylized as Se7en), directed by David Fincher, is a dark, psychological crime thriller that follows two homicide detectives, the world-weary and soon-to-retire William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and the idealistic but hot-headed newcomer David Mills (Brad Pitt). They become entangled in the case of a meticulous and brilliant serial killer who bases his murders on the seven deadly sins. The detectives must race against time to understand the killer's macabre motivations before he completes his gruesome masterpiece.
Did You Know?
The studio was famously unhappy with the film's bleak and shocking ending and pushed for a more conventional one. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman stood firm, with Pitt reportedly having a clause in his contract stating the original ending had to be kept. The film's iconic, visually gritty opening credit sequence was designed by Kyle Cooper and is considered highly influential in the field of title design. Denzel Washington was originally offered the role of Detective Mills but turned it down. The killer's elaborately detailed and disturbing diaries were created for the film, filled with writings and drawings, and took two months to complete.
