Jennifer Lopez, in a star-making performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination, was chosen for the lead role out of approximately 22,000 actresses. To prepare, Lopez lived with Selena's family to better understand her character. The film used archival footage and audio of Selena's actual performances, seamlessly blending them with Lopez's acting. Many of the extras in the massive Houston Astrodome concert scene were actual fans who had attended Selena's last concert, bringing their own memorabilia and recreating the experience out of love for the late singer.
