The only prominent use of color is a little girl's red coat, which symbolizes a turning point for Schindler's conscience. Steven Spielberg famously refused to accept a salary for directing the film, calling any potential earnings "blood money." Instead, he used the profits to establish the USC Shoah Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recording and preserving interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and is preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
