Directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, this 1983 crime epic is a loose remake of the 1932 film of the same name. It chronicles the meteoric and violent rise and fall of Tony Montana (Al Pacino), a determined Cuban refugee who arrives in 1980s Miami with nothing and builds a powerful cocaine empire through ruthless ambition and aggression. The film is a brutal and stylish examination of the excesses of greed and the corrupting nature of power, and has since become one of the most iconic and quoted gangster films in cinema history.
Interesting Tidbit: Upon its initial release, the film was so controversial for its extreme violence, graphic language, and drug use that it was given an "X" rating three times by the MPAA. Director Brian De Palma and producer Martin Bregman refused to re-edit the film. They arranged a hearing with the ratings board where they brought in a panel of experts, including real law enforcement officers, who testified that the film was an accurate portrayal of the drug underworld and should be seen by a wider audience. They successfully argued their case, and the film was granted an "R" rating without any cuts being made.
