Directed and co-written by Oliver Stone, this 1986 war drama is based on the real-life experiences of photojournalist Richard Boyle. The film follows Boyle (James Woods), a cynical and down-on-his-luck journalist who travels to El Salvador in 1980 with his friend Doctor Rock (Jim Belushi), hoping to find some freelance work. They soon find themselves caught in the middle of the brutal Salvadoran Civil War, witnessing the atrocities committed by the military regime and the escalating conflict. The film is a raw and intense look at the horrors of war and the moral awakening of its protagonist. Woods received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance.

Interesting Tidbit: The film was shot on a very low budget in Mexico, often under dangerous and chaotic conditions that mirrored the film's subject matter. The production had to hire real off-duty Mexican soldiers as extras for the combat scenes. Director Oliver Stone later recalled that the soldiers were firing live ammunition (though not at the actors) to make the battles look more authentic, which created an extremely tense and unpredictable atmosphere on set
