This 1988 road drama, directed by Barry Levinson, won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman. The film tells the story of Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a self-centered and abrasive car dealer who learns that his estranged father has died and left his multi-million dollar fortune to an older brother Charlie never knew he had. This brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), is an autistic savant living in an institution. In an attempt to get what he believes is his half of the inheritance, Charlie checks Raymond out of the institution, and the two embark on a life-changing cross-country road trip.
Interesting Tidbit: Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Raymond Babbitt is one of the most celebrated performances in film history, but he was not the first choice for the role. Bill Murray was originally considered for the part of Raymond, with Hoffman initially slated to play Charlie Babbitt. Hoffman, however, was fascinated by the character of Raymond and pushed to switch roles. His decision led him to conduct a year's worth of intensive research, including spending time with autistic individuals and their families, to develop his deeply authentic and respectful performance.
