Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is an epic historical fantasy anime from Studio Ghibli. Set in late Muromachi-period Japan, the film follows Ashitaka, the young prince of a secluded village who is afflicted by a deadly curse after defending his people from a demon. His journey to find a cure leads him to the middle of a bitter conflict between the industrious humans of Irontown and the gods of the forest, including San, a fierce young woman raised by wolves, who is known as Princess Mononoke.
Did You Know?
The film was a massive box office success in Japan, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in the country until it was surpassed by Titanic a few months later. Princess Mononoke was for a long time the most expensive animated film ever made. Hayao Miyazaki began developing the concepts and sketches for the film as early as the late 1970s. The term "Mononoke" is not a name but a Japanese word for a spirit or monster. The film's English-language adaptation was written by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman.
