Franz Marc was a co-founder of the seminal art group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) along with Wassily Kandinsky. His life's work was an attempt to paint the world from their spiritual perspective. Tragically, Marc's revolutionary career was cut short. He volunteered for the German army in World War I, initially believing the conflict might "purify" a corrupt Europe, but was killed in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun at the age of 36.
