The style of the dancing figures is heavily inspired by the famous "cut-outs" of the French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954).
In his later years, after surgery left him unable to stand and paint for long periods, Matisse didn't stop creating. Instead, he developed a new technique he called "drawing with scissors." His assistants would paint large sheets of paper with gouache, and Matisse, often from his wheelchair, would cut shapes and figures from them. He then arranged these cut-outs into vibrant, lively compositions. This late-career innovation, known as his gouaches découpées, is considered a brilliant and influential final chapter in his work, proving that physical limitations couldn't restrain his artistic spirit. The figures in your image are a clear homage to this iconic style.
