Papillon is a 2017 biographical drama directed by Michael Noer, starring Charlie Hunnam as Henri "Papillon" Charrière and Rami Malek as Louis Dega. Based on Charrière's autobiographies, the film chronicles his wrongful imprisonment in the notorious French Guiana penal colony and his relentless quest for freedom. As Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with fellow inmate Dega, their bond becomes a testament to resilience and the human spirit amidst harrowing conditions.

Did You Know?

Charlie Hunnam lost approximately 40 pounds to authentically portray the physical toll of solitary confinement on Papillon.

The film was shot in various European locations, including Montenegro, Malta, and Serbia, to replicate the tropical setting of French Guiana.

"Papillon" means "butterfly" in French, a nickname derived from the butterfly tattoo on Charrière's chest.

This remake reunites Charlie Hunnam and Tommy Flanagan, who previously co-starred in the television series Sons of Anarchy.

The character of Louis Dega, portrayed by Rami Malek, is believed to be a composite of multiple real-life individuals Charrière encountered during his incarceration.
