MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album and televised performance by the American rock band Nirvana. Recorded on November 18, 1993, at Sony Music Studios in New York City, the performance showcases the band in an intimate and acoustic setting, a stark departure from their typically loud and aggressive grunge sound. The setlist largely eschewed their biggest hits in favor of lesser-known original tracks and cover songs, revealing a more raw, vulnerable, and musically diverse side of the band and its frontman, Kurt Cobain.

The entire performance was recorded in a single take, a rarity for television productions. Kurt Cobain famously insisted the stage be decorated with black candles, stargazer lilies, and a large crystal chandelier, reportedly telling the producers he wanted the set to look "like a funeral." The band was joined on stage by guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston, as well as Cris and Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets for performances of three of their songs. Despite pressure from MTV executives to play more of their hits like "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the band refused, sticking to the more personal and somber setlist they had prepared. The album was released posthumously after Kurt Cobain's death and won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996.
