This print depicts a corded poodle, a very popular and high-fashion grooming style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries where the coat was meticulously cultivated into long, dreadlock-like cords. While we now associate the poodle with French elegance, the breed is actually German in origin and began as a rugged water-retrieving dog for hunters. Its name comes from the German word pudeln, which means "to splash." The famous "poodle clip" was first a practical cut, designed to protect the dog's joints from cold water while allowing it to swim freely.
