Moonlight is an intimate coming-of-age drama directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney’s semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film follows the life of Chiron, a young Black man growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood, as he grapples with his identity, family, and sexuality across three defining stages of his life. Told with poetic visuals and quiet intensity, the film explores themes of masculinity, vulnerability, and human connection with profound sensitivity.
Did You Know?
Moonlight was the first film with an all-Black cast and the first LGBTQ-themed film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The film was famously involved in the 2017 Oscars mix-up, where La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture before Moonlight was correctly awarded.
The story’s structure is divided into three acts—childhood, adolescence, and adulthood—with three different actors playing Chiron at each stage.
None of the actors playing Chiron met during filming, allowing each to bring a unique, unfiltered portrayal to their chapter of the character’s life.
The film was made on a modest budget of around $1.5 million and became a critical and box office success, praised for its direction, performances, and emotional depth.
