Lost in Translation is a romantic drama written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Set in Tokyo, the film follows Bob Harris, a faded American movie star, and Charlotte, a young woman questioning her life and marriage. The two form a quiet, unexpected bond as they navigate loneliness, cultural disorientation, and the fleeting intimacy of shared moments in a city far from home.

Did You Know?

Bill Murray was Coppola’s first and only choice for the role of Bob Harris, and much of his dialogue was improvised, adding to the film’s organic tone. Sofia Coppola wrote the script specifically with Tokyo in mind, drawing from her own experiences of alienation while traveling. The film was shot quickly with a small crew, often using natural lighting and real locations to maintain authenticity. Scarlett Johansson was just 17 during filming, bringing a sense of vulnerability and introspection to Charlotte’s character. Lost in Translation earned four Academy Award nominations, with Coppola winning for Best Original Screenplay, making her the third woman in history to be nominated for Best Director.
