Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee and based on the novel by Yann Martel, follows the extraordinary journey of a young boy named Pi, who survives a shipwreck only to find himself stranded on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean—with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. As days turn into months, Pi must rely on his wit, willpower, and beliefs to survive. The film is a deeply spiritual and visually breathtaking story about resilience, imagination, and the meaning of truth.
Did You Know?
Director Ang Lee won the Academy Award for Best Director, and the film received a total of four Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
The tiger, Richard Parker, was mostly created with CGI—only a few shots in the film use a real tiger, but the digital version was so realistic it fooled many viewers.
Suraj Sharma, who played Pi, had never acted in a film before and was chosen from over 3,000 auditions. He was 17 at the time of filming.
Most of the ocean scenes were shot in a giant water tank built specifically for the film, located in Taiwan.
The story is framed around the idea that it’s not just about survival, but how we choose to interpret and tell our own stories—and what truths we hold on to.
