Les Misérables, directed by Bille August, is a non-musical dramatic adaptation of Victor Hugo's renowned 1862 novel. The film powerfully portrays the life of Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson), an ex-convict struggling to live an honest life after serving a lengthy prison sentence for stealing bread. He is relentlessly pursued by the determined Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush) against the backdrop of social and political turmoil in 19th-century France, as Valjean strives for redemption and cares for Cosette (Claire Danes), the orphaned daughter of the tragic Fantine (Uma Thurman).

This adaptation notably does not include the songs from the famous stage musical, focusing instead on the dramatic core of Victor Hugo's novel. Liam Neeson was praised for his portrayal of the tormented but noble Jean Valjean. The film was shot in various locations in France and the Czech Republic to capture the historical atmosphere. Uma Thurman, who played Fantine, and Geoffrey Rush, who played Javert, were also acclaimed for their powerful performances in this version of the classic story.
