Léon: The Professional (released as Léon in France), written and directed by Luc Besson, is a French thriller about a lonely and enigmatic hitman (Jean Reno) living in New York City. He reluctantly takes in Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her film debut), a 12-year-old girl, after her family is murdered by a corrupt DEA agent (Gary Oldman). An unusual bond forms as Léon teaches Mathilda the skills of his trade.

Did You Know?

This was Natalie Portman's first feature film role; she was only 11 years old when she auditioned. Luc Besson wrote the script in just 30 days while waiting for Bruce Willis to become available for The Fifth Element. The original French theatrical version is longer and contains scenes that were cut from the American release to secure an R rating, though an extended "international cut" or "director's cut" is now widely available. Jean Reno played a similar hitman character named Victor "The Cleaner" in Besson's earlier film Nikita (1990), and some consider Léon to be a spiritual successor or expansion of that character.
