L.A. Confidential, directed by Curtis Hanson, is a neo-noir crime film set in 1950s Los Angeles, based on James Ellroy's novel. It follows three LAPD officers with very different personalities and methods: the straight-laced Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), the brutal Bud White (Russell Crowe), and the celebrity-obsessed Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey). Their paths intertwine as they investigate a series of murders, uncovering deep-rooted corruption.

The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two: Best Supporting Actress for Kim Basinger and Best Adapted Screenplay for Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland. Australian actors Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe were relatively unknown in Hollywood before being cast in the lead roles. Director Curtis Hanson made the actors watch classic noir films and provided them with extensive research materials to immerse them in 1950s Los Angeles. James Ellroy, the author of the source novel, praised the film adaptation for capturing the spirit of his complex work.
