Tarantino drew inspiration from classic Westerns and kung fu films for the tone and style of Volume II, contrasting the first film’s heavy martial arts influence. Uma Thurman spent months training in sword fighting, hand-to-hand combat, and the famous "Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique." David Carradine, who plays Bill, was Tarantino’s personal choice for the role and delivered much of his dialogue in long, philosophical monologues. Much of the film was shot in real desert locations in California and Mexico, giving it an authentic spaghetti Western feel. Despite being intended as one film initially, the two volumes were split due to the sheer amount of material and Tarantino’s desire to fully develop The Bride’s journey.
