Jumanji is a fantasy adventure film directed by Joe Johnston, based on the 1981 children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. The story begins in 1969 when a young boy, Alan Parrish, discovers a mysterious board game and is magically transported into its dangerous jungle world. Twenty-six years later, two new children, Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), find the game and begin to play, unwittingly releasing the now-adult Alan (Robin Williams) along with a host of jungle perils that begin to wreak havoc on their town. They soon realize the only way to reverse the chaos is to finish the game they started.

Robin Williams was known for improvising on set, and many of his comedic moments were ad-libbed. The character of the hunter, Van Pelt, and Alan's father, Sam Parrish, were both played by the same actor, Jonathan Hyde. Scarlett Johansson auditioned for the role of Judy Shepherd, which ultimately went to Kirsten Dunst. The name "Jumanji" is a Zulu word meaning "many effects," which refers to the "exciting consequences" of playing the game.
