Interview with the Vampire, directed by Neil Jordan, is a gothic horror film based on Anne Rice's 1976 novel of the same name. Anne Rice, the author of the novel, was initially very critical of the casting of Tom Cruise as Lestat but later praised his performance after seeing the film. River Phoenix was originally cast as the interviewer, Daniel Molloy, but died before filming began; Christian Slater took over the role and donated his entire salary to Phoenix's favorite charities. Kirsten Dunst, who was only 11 years old during filming, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Claudia.
