Directed by Steven Spielberg and created by George Lucas, this 1981 action-adventure film introduces the world to the iconic archaeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford). Set in 1936, the story follows Jones as he is hired by the U.S. government to find the legendary Ark of the Covenant before it falls into the hands of the Nazis, who believe its biblical powers will make them invincible. The film is a masterful tribute to the adventure serials of the 1930s and 40s and is widely considered one of the greatest action movies ever made.
Interesting Tidbit: One of the most famous scenes in the film—where Indiana Jones is confronted by a flashy swordsman in the Cairo market and simply shoots him—was completely improvised. The script originally called for a long, elaborate whip-versus-sword fight. However, on the day of shooting, Harrison Ford and most of the crew were suffering from food poisoning. Not feeling up to the strenuous fight scene, Ford suggested to director Steven Spielberg, "Let's just shoot the sucker." Spielberg loved the idea, and the iconic, character-defining moment of comedic anti-climax was born.
