The source of her revolutionary vision was spiritualism; af Klint was a mystic who claimed that her most important artworks were commissioned by otherworldly guides during séances. Convinced that the world was not yet ready to understand her work, she stipulated in her will that her vast collection of abstract paintings should remain hidden from the public for at least 20 years after her death. As a result, her genius was largely unknown until a sensational exhibition in 2018 completely rewrote the history of modern art, rightfully placing her as one of its true pioneers.
