Heat, written and directed by Michael Mann, is a critically acclaimed crime drama that pits a brilliant and obsessive career criminal, Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), against an equally driven and intelligent LAPD detective, Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). The film is renowned for its complex characters, stylish action sequences, and the iconic first on-screen pairing of Pacino and De Niro in a scene together.

Did You Know?

The film is a remake of Michael Mann's 1989 television movie L.A. Takedown. The famous coffee shop scene between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro was shot with minimal rehearsal so the actors' interaction would feel more spontaneous; they were not on set together for the reverse shots. The intricate and realistic bank robbery shootout sequence was so authentic that it has reportedly been studied by military personnel. Val Kilmer, who plays Chris Shiherlis, practiced with live ammunition at a firing range for several months to prepare for his role.
