Groundhog Day, directed by Harold Ramis, is a fantasy comedy that follows Phil Connors (Bill Murray), a cynical and arrogant television meteorologist. He is sent on his least favorite assignment: covering the annual Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. After a miserable day, Phil wakes up the next morning to discover that it's Groundhog Day all over again. He finds himself trapped in a seemingly endless time loop, forced to relive the same day repeatedly, leading him on a journey of despair, indulgence, and eventual self-discovery.
Did You Know?
The screenplay was co-written by Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis. While the film never specifies the exact duration of the time loop, Ramis stated in an interview that he believed Phil Connors was trapped for about 10 years, though other estimates based on the skills he learns (like mastering piano and ice sculpting) have suggested a much longer period. The film was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, not Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and the town now hosts an annual "Groundhog Day" festival for fans. Bill Murray was actually bitten by the groundhog (whose real name was Scooter) twice during filming, requiring him to get anti-rabies injections.
