This 1987 comedy-drama, directed by Barry Levinson, features Robin Williams in one of his most iconic roles. The film is a loose biography of Adrian Cronauer, a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service in 1965 Saigon. Cronauer's irreverent on-air antics and love of rock and roll make him a massive hit with the troops but infuriate his straight-laced superiors. The film masterfully balances Williams's manic comedic energy with a poignant look at the realities of the Vietnam War. Williams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance.
Interesting Tidbit: Nearly all of Adrian Cronauer's radio broadcasts in the film were improvised by Robin Williams. The script simply had placeholders like "Robin Williams does his thing," and he would then ad-lib the entire scene, often doing a unique and different performance with every take. The other actors in the radio station scenes were genuinely hearing his material for the first time, so their laughter and reactions are authentic.
